"Remnant's"
Oil Paintings on wood with Fabric

These current paintings evolved from a series of what I call Quilt Painting: fabric sewn together and stretched over wood to create work that spoke to the idea of elevating so called craft to “art”. I began painting on top of these textile collages, trying to integrate the patterns of the fabric with the color and texture of paint. As I experimented I realized that my attraction to this textile/paint combination was the play between what is permanent (pattern, color, texture of fabric) and what is invented (pattern, texture, color of paint).

This led me to create surfaces with more room for improvisation: instead of painting on quilts entirely made from fabric, I began painting on wood. I cut shapes out of the wood, covered them with fabric, and set them back into the surface. This is the process I currently use. I let the painting decide where it wants to go; I listen and respond to what is happening on the surface. The result (I hope) is as interesting and enjoyable as the process.

I aim to create work that is straightforward yet has many layers; combining the known with the unknown in terms of mediums, processes and, ideas.
